Spirit Of Debt: How To Overcome It Now

Listen to this article

Introduction

What Is A Spirit Of Debt?

A spirit of debt is one that takes the form of lack and want, and as a result, it might lead us to modify our behavior so as to fight in the working environment. Many people will tell you that they don’t know how they got into debt; they will tell you that it’s like something pushed them into debt. This spirit can make you do things you never intended to do, and as a result, you end up in debt.

As pastors, we’re not immune. Many pastors have a hard time teaching about money because of the personal guilt they feel about their own financial problems. Debt is a problem we can’t ignore any longer. But how do we get out from under it? We are supposed to be different from the rest of the world, so we are not supposed to be drowning in debt (meaning that the Spirit of Debt has a firm hold on you) like them.

According to 1 Timothy 6:6–10, most of us, due to greed, want stuff that leads us to make foolish decisions, which leads us into doing foolish things, like taking unnecessary debts in order to meet every want presented to us by life.

The more money you have, the more you want more, until it reaches a point whereby you feel that you need more but don’t have enough at your disposal, and that is whereby you reach out to other people or institutions to give you that more money you want at a cost, and that is how you land yourself in debt, caught by the spirit of debt.

Many people are not used to having too much money, so as they get used to how to handle this much money, they end up overstepping the boundaries of money management, and that is how they find themselves at the other end of money called debt space.

Many of us are being crushed by the weight of our unnecessary debts. Some of the debts we made were not necessary and could have been avoided. Instead of someone coming to our aid, they are adding to this already unbearable condition.

Before You Get Into Debt Or If In Debt Ask Yourself These Questions.

How did I get into this debt problem? How did the spirit of debt come into my life? How deep am I in debt? Do I have a plan in place for how I will come out of this debt problem? Many people can’t tell you how they got into so much debt. That is why I can say with certainty that debt is a spirit, and the spirit of debt can attack you with the intention of destroying you, your family, and even your spiritual life.

Remember, just like when you have an injury, all you think about all day is the pain coming from that injury. This is the same case when it comes to debt. All you think about is how you will end up losing everything.

According to 2 Kings 4:1, you can see that debts can be passed on from one person to another. That is why we say that debts are spirits; in short, they have a life of their own and they can take over someone’s life, just the same way an evil spirit possesses someone and makes him or her do strange things.

Debt and the Spirit of Debt can hurt your relationship; it can even lead to a broken home.

Before you had a debt, you used to be happy and free with other people, but since you acquired a debt, your life changed altogether for the worse. Most of the time you are gloomy, angry, and easily irritated by things that never bothered you even hiding yourself from your friends and relatives.

When you are deep in debt and the spirit of debt has its hold on you, you don’t come out of it by taking another debt to pay the debt you are in now; instead, you respond to the debt by looking into the scripture and seeing how others came out of their debts. You can’t do it alone without involving God. Although you entered those debts alone, you need God to come out of them.

According to 1 Corinthians 3:9, we are co-laborers with God. So, learn to cooperate with God and do what he tells you to do to get out of debt. In short, you have a part to play, so don’t just pray and then go and sit and wait for the debt (spirit of debt) to go away.

1 Samuel 30:8 So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” Before you started that business, did you check with God, or did you only check with God after you got into debt?

God didn’t promise us that he would cancel the outcomes of our wrong choices or wrong behaviors. God wants us to be debt-free so that we can be financially free and available to serve Him only; after all, you can’t serve both money and God (Matthew 6:24). Having debts leads you to live a life of constant fear, and hence you can’t give God your undivided attention.

When God created us, he didn’t create us to be slaves to anyone or anything. For instance, in the spirit of debt, we were created to be rulers and heads and not anything else (Deuteronomy 28:13). Remember, if you are a borrower who is in debt, it means that you will be a slave to someone (Proverbs 22:7).

Lastly, never allow debt to become a habit if you want to live a debt-free life. I am not saying you should never borrow. You might need to at times. But never live with any loan for the full term. Whenever you must borrow, always dedicate your energy and resources to repaying the loan as soon as possible. Never let debt become a lifestyle!

Always remember that borrowed money is just a license to pretend. So don’t let the spirit of debt ruin your life.
