Spirit Of Regret: 15 Prayers To Overcome It Now

Listen to this article

Philippians 3:13–14, “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…”

Spirit of regret is an evil spirit that traps a person in constant sorrow, guilt, self-condemnation, and mourning over past mistakes, missed opportunities, or wrong decisions. As a result of it a person cannot move forward because they are continually looking backward. The enemy knows he cannot change your past, but he will try to use your past to change your future. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”— John 10:10. The spirit of regret steals: purpose, vision, confidence, courage, hope, joy, and faith.

For instance, we see that Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom because her heart remained attached to what God was delivering her from and became a pillar of salt according to genesis 19:26.

Many people confuse regret with repentance.

Regret says:

  • I hate the consequences.
  • I wish I had not been caught.
  • I cannot forgive myself.
  • My future is ruined.

For instance, Judas regretted and ran away from God and ended in despair.

Repentance says:

  • I have sinned.
  • I turn back to God.
  • I receive God’s mercy.
  • I move forward in obedience.

For instance, Peter repented and ran to God and ended in restoration.

8 Signs of A Spirit Of Regret

  • Constantly saying, “If only I had…”
  • Living in the past instead of focusing on the future.
  • Feeling condemned over forgiven sins.
  • Replaying failures repeatedly in the mind.
  • Bitterness over lost opportunities.
  • Believing God can no longer use you because of past mistakes.
  • Difficulty receiving joy, peace, or hope.
  • Comparing your life with others and feeling disappointed.

Let’s Pray:

12. Let every chain connecting my future to the failures of my past, break by fire, in Jesus’ name.

13. Let every satanic courtroom that is accusing me because of my past, be silenced by the power in the blood of Jesus.

14. Heavenly Father, give me grace to move forward through the doors that You have opened for me that were closed by regret, in Jesus name.

15. Let every evil thought pattern that has continually takes me back to painful mistakes, break now, in Jesus name,

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”Isaiah 43:18–19. Always remember that the spirit of regret says, “Look at what you lost.” God says, “Look at what I am about to do.” it is a very evil spirit that causes a person to be emotionally and spiritually stuck in yesterday, while God is calling them to move forward into tomorrow. The spirit of regret does not merely remind you of the past; it uses the past to stop your future.
