What Is A Fast?
30 Biblical Reasons For Why We Should Fast
What causes most people to take part in fasting? Is it just to lose weight or does it go beyond that? We might say that this is partly true but there are many more reasons which we will explore below. Some of the reasons may be health related while others are spiritually related. According to Matthew 6:16-18, we see that Jesus expected us to fast without being forced. No wonder, He said, “when you fast…”. He was making an assumption that every Christian should fast.
Your focus should be on your relationship with God and not on letting the world know you are fasting. So let us explore some more reasons why people fast:
1. Fasting when you are facing a fierce battle (1 Samuel 7:7)
2. Fasting when you are choosing leaders in the Ministry (Acts 13:2)
3. Fasting when you are experiencing grief (2 Samuel 1:12)
4. Fasting when you are appointing elders (Acts 14:23)
5. Fasting when you are looking for God’s intervention (Daniel 10:3)
6. Fasting when you are seeking God’s face (Exodus 34:28)
7. Fasting when you are seeking God’s favour (Esther 4:16)
8. Fasting when you are doing your repentance (Joel 2:12)
9. Fasting when you want to start doing Godly duties (Luke 18:12)
10. Fasting when you are interceding (Nehemiah 1:4)
11. Fasting when you are facing God’s anger and you want God to stop (Jonah 3:5-9)
12. Fasting when you are traveling, and you want journey mercies (Ezra 8:21-23)
13. Fasting when you want God’s Humility (1 Kings 21:25-27)
14. Fasting when you want to save lives (2 Samuel 12:15-17)
15. Fasting when you want personal solutions to problems (Psalm 69:10)
16. Fasting when you want God’s forgiveness (Joel 2:12-13)
17. Fasting when you want God to heal you (Psalm 35:13-14)
18. Fasting when you want to go on a mission (Acts 13:3-4)
19. Fasting when you want to overcome all forms of temptations (Matthew 4:1-11)
20. Fasting when you want to strengthen your prayers because doing this removes unbelief (Matthew 17:21)
21. Fasting because Jesus did it (Matthew 4:1, 2; John 6:27)and he instructed us to do the same (Luke 9:23.)
22. Fasting because Paul did it (2 Corinthians 11:27)and he instructed us to do the same (2 Corinthians 6:5.)
23. Fasting because everyone in the early church did it (Acts 14:23)and we should be encouraged to do the same.
24. Fasting when you want to break the yokes of sin, sickness and spiritual oppression in your life(Isaiah 58:6.)
25. Fasting so that you can increase your faith (Luke 4:2, 32, 36)
26. Fasting brings your sinful body under control (I Corinthians. 9:27)
27. Fasting is the best way a sinner can come back to Christ (Psalms 35:13; Psalms 109:24)
28. Fasting helps us overcome old addictions or unhealthy behaviors (Colossians 3:5).
29. Fasting gives you spiritual Authority over demonic forces ( Luke 4:14)
30. Fasting opens your spiritual eyes and ears to understand spiritual matters better.
Please avoid attempting prolonged fasting unless you are fully aware of the right way to resume eating. Consecrated Bible fasting is not dangerous, but the timing and manner of eating food might be extremely harmful, and the physical benefits gained may be lost if you eat a lot of food immediately. The Lord Jesus was tempted by Satan to break His fast and eat. Also, after a prolonged fast, we could be tempted to overeat.
