Spiritual Doors: What Should Christians Do With Them Now

Listen to this article

What Are Doors According To The Bible?

These “doors” might be visible (spiritual doors) or invisible to the carnal eye. Doors are mentioned more than 400 times in the Bible concerning different states of our existence. There are several times in the Bible when things are about to move from one reality to the next, from one stage of the events to a whole new chapter, and a doorway is mentioned.

So, we can say that doors are portals; hence, spiritual doors are the same—they are the transition from one space and environment to another. We use doors to leave one space and enter another. A spiritual door may represent different things. Always remember that doors can be used as entrances or exits, and spiritual doors are the same. They can be a bridge to something great or a barrier. They can represent acceptance or rejection.

What Are Some Of The Different Types Of Doors Mentioned In The Bible?

Some of the doors mentioned in the Bible are:

  • The Ark Door: The door to Noah’s ark is one of the first doors mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 6:16).
  • The Passover Door: Moses was instructed to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, and during the first Passover, they had to mark their doors with blood in order for them to be safe (attain salvation) from the Angel of Death.(Exodus 12:7–13).
  • The Temple Door: King Solomon was instructed to build the first temple, and in it were doors for the outer court, inner court, etc.. (1 Kings 6:31–35).
  • The Shepherd Door: Jesus said, “I am the door of the sheep.” (John 10:7-9).
  • The Cross: Man is sinful and separated from God, so firstly, the Passover and Temple doors were spiritual doors that brought people together in order to reconnect, but ultimately, it was the cross used by Jesus to reconnect us.
  • The Tomb Door (Matthew 28:1–6).
  • The Wide and Narrow Doors (Matthew 7:13-14).

Where Were These Doors Used In The Bible?

They were used at:

1.  the entry point to houses (Deuteronomy 6:9)

2.  The entry point to cities (1 Kings 17:10)

3. In the first and second temples (Acts 3:2)

4. In prisons (Acts 12:13 )

5. In palaces (Esther 5:13)

What Was The Use Of Doors In Bible Times?

  • At the gates of the city, important decisions, judgments and verdicts were handed down.
  • Conflicts and controversies were settled there (2 Samuel 15:2)
  • Deals were cut and transactions were sealed at the gate (Isaiah 45:1).
  • Honor was bestowed at the gate (Proverbs 31:31).
  • Blessings were pronounced at the gate (Psalm 147:13).
  • Curses were issued as punishment for offenses at the gate (Deuteronomy 21:18-19).

Matter of fact is that the gate played such a pivotal role in the life of every community that in times of war, the enemy’s first order of business was to seize control of the gate!

We Can Classify These Doors (Spiritual doors) Into 3 Major Classes.

1. The Open Door (1 Corinthians 16:8-9)

If an open door is truly from God, it will not contradict what God has already said in his Word. God will never tell you something different from his word. And if a door presents you with an opportunity to do something contrary to the Bible, it’s not a door from God. God’s Word is true today and forever. Jesus says in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.“. No matter how exciting a door looks, it’ll be a disaster if it’s contrary to God’s Word.

God will open spiritual doors for me if I open doors for others. God wants you to learn to be generous. The Bible says in Proverbs 11:25, “Be generous, and you will be prosperous. Help others, and you will be helped”.

2. The Closed Door (Matthew 6:6)

Sometimes God shuts a door for my protection. People often believe a shut door is a problem. Maybe you lose a job, or a relationship ends and you’re devastated for a time, but you come to find out that God shut the door for your protection.

Think about Noah. When he had done everything God had told him to do and all the animals and all of his family were on the ark, the Bible says: “Then the LORD shut the door behind Noah” (Genesis 7:16). God wanted to protect Noah from the flood. He wants to protect you, too. Maybe God wants to shut a door for a new ministry assignment because he knows you’re not the right fit for it.

God uses closed doors to open up bigger and better ones for us down the road.  A closed door doesn’t mean that it’s over for you. Contrarily, it means that God is getting you ready for something bigger, better, and far greater than before. You have come too far to back down and quit. God is saying to you today, “Don’t let closed doors bother you. Keep on moving forward. Where you are now is only temporary, it is not where you are going to remain.”

3. The Unanswered Door (Revelation 3:20).

When Can You Close Unwanted Doors?

According to Matthew 25:1-10, at midnight the doors were closed. Midnight is the time when “doors” are spiritually shut against people in the realm of the spirit.

Jesus tells us to shut both the physical and spiritual door when we pray, and we also see the prophets of old closing the doors when praying for miracles (see 2 Kings 4) to indicate the seriousness of the intimate encounter with God that was about to occur. The door of Noah’s ark was shut by God Himself (Genesis 7:16), and is a picture of salvation. There will be a day when the spiritual door of salvation is finally closed by God.

Ultimately, all authority to open and close spiritual doors lies with Jesus, Son of David (Isaiah 22:22, Revelation 3:7).

When Can You Open Those Closed Doors?

At midnight doors were opened for Paul and Silas according to Acts 16:25-26. We see that according to Psalm 24:7-10, Instead of doors being shut, the door (and gates) are being commanded to “lift ” i.e. to open immediately.

Conclusion.

There is no limit to what God can do in your life. God wants to bless you, and He wants to increase you. Keep persisting. Today can be a breakthrough day. First, make sure you overcome the business of the day.

In 1853-1854, English Artist, William Holman Hunt created an exquisite work of art titled, “The Light of the World.” In the beautifully rendered, symbolic painting, Jesus is standing at a door knocking. Yet, there is not a doorknob displayed on the painting. It was depicted that the artist once explained the symbolism stating, that ‘the door he had painted, was the spiritual door to a person’s heart.’

Trust God, even if you can’t understand what’s going on in your life. Seek Him, and He will shed a light that will lead and show you the way to the open spiritual door. He is there for you; lovingly waiting, caring, knocking… and He is asking to come into your life.
