What Do You Mean To Forgive?
Are you carrying around any known or unknown hurt and brokenness in your life? We are not designed to hold onto the bitterness and resentment that come with past hurts. After you forgive someone, you may continue to struggle with bitterness or anger. However, your emotions often change after you decide to forgive. Although you start out choosing to forgive, you often end up feeling forgiving.
How do we forgive someone who has hurt us badly? By what means do we advance from the things and people that caused us pain? Moving on from a wounding relationship or incident is a very challenging phase for everyone. It requires more than just the courage to move forward. It demands our humility, honesty, compassion, and faith.
The Bible has a lot to say about this word. Bible verses about forgiveness give us the best tips in forgiving.
How Can We Forgive someone?
Keep in mind what forgiving entails. You are simply letting it go without condoning the wrong or acting as if it never happened.
Understand the advantages of forgiveness. Our health, happiness, and ability to remain calm can all be enhanced by letting go of anger and resentment. (Proverbs 14:30) And much more importantly, receiving God’s forgiveness for your own sins depends on your ability to forgive others. (Matthew 6:14, 15).
Be understanding. All of us are imperfect. (James 3:2) Just as we value forgiveness, so too should we be willing to overlook others’ sins. (Matthew 7:12).
Be reasonable. When we have a minor cause for complaint, we can apply the Bible’s counsel: “Continue putting up with one another.” (Colossians 3:13).
Act quickly. If you can, try to forgive right away rather than allowing your anger to grow. (Ephesians 4:26, 27).
What Are The Steps That You Can Follow In Order To Forgive Someone?
1. Ask the Lord to help you forgive.
It’s difficult to forget some things. Ask the Lord’s assistance. Also, request his pardon for not pardoning the other individual.
2. Pray for humility in your prayers.
If you need to forgive someone else, ask God for wisdom on how to keep the right mindset while avoiding being self-righteous. Keep in mind your own mistakes. If you believe that even if you sin, you would never behave in that way, be careful. You are assuming that God sees your sins as less severe than that person’s if you believe this. You might be wrong.
3. Ask God to forgive the one who hurt you.
There’s something powerful about praying for people who abused you. For instance, in the book of Acts 7:60, Stephen prayed these words as he was being stoned to death: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” In short, Stephen prayed, “Lord, forgive them.”
4. Don’t think about what happened to you too much/Refuse to focus on what happened to you.
Learn how to control your thoughts. Think about things that are pure and praiseworthy. In conclusion, my friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. (Philippians 4:8)
5. Stop talking about your past wounds.
In general, after you’ve excused someone else’s behaviors, don’t do it again or spread rumors about it to other people. However, it’s acceptable to speak with a mature Christian who can pray with you and provide godly guidance if you’re having difficulties processing what happened or realize you have an incorrect attitude.
6. Never “take back” your forgiveness..
It’s simple to forgive, only to later regret it. Refuse to think of anything that makes you want to withdraw your forgiveness. Instead, enjoy the freedom that comes from forgiving others.
So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest. (Galatians 6:9). And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. (2 Thessalonians 3:13).
How To Identify Someone You Want To forgive.
Now take a moment to think of someone you have not forgiven for hurting or disappointing you. If you have trouble thinking of someone, ask yourself the following questions. If you answer “yes” to any of them, it’s a sign you may need to forgive this person.
Do you feel anger, resentment, or bitterness toward someone?
Do you think a lot about what someone did to you?
Do you talk with others about the ways someone mistreated you?
Do you hope bad things will happen to someone?
Do you feel sorry for yourself?
Remember that forgiveness is a choice. If you have trouble making this choice, then read your bible carefully and what it says about forgiving.
