Walk with God: What Christians Should Always Know Now.

Listen to this article

How To Walk With God.

In a world full of sin like ours, we are afraid of walking with God, and we are afraid that he will harm us because of our sinful nature. Remember that the bible asks us the question: “shall two walk together unless they agree to do so.” in the book of Amos 3:3. Remember before you start the walk with God, He is Holy and we must be Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16), but we are sinners, and that’s why He Himself calls us to take a bold step, which is to come into His throne room to obtain mercy as said in the book of Hebrews 4:16

Why do we call it a walk with God and not a run with God?

It’s because it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Most of the time we feel that the walk is very slow, and we expect it to turn into a sprint, and by that I mean that you expect that your anointing, will increase suddenly because you gave, or you fasted or you prayed one long prayer like the Pharisees used to; then you think that’s it. Do you think that after doing all this, God will show up?

Remember Luke 14:28, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” That is why God says to come and let us reason together… (Isaiah 1:18) it’s not that simple or a quick fix.

For you to start the walk with God, you have to count what it will cost you, the time, the friends, and even sometimes your career. God is the one in charge and he might have other plans, different from yours (Jeremiah 29:11) and this might inconvenience you. Brethren if you have to walk with God then you are supposed to be a good listener because, “You will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way. Follow it, whether it turns to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21).

Has Anyone In The Bible Ever Had A Walk with God?

  • Enoch had a walk with God (Genesis 5:22, 24)
  • Elijah had a walk with God (1 Kings 19: 5-7)
  • The Children of Israel had a walk with God (Joshua 5:6)
  • You Can also walk with God.

How do I walk with God?

To learn to walk with God you must understand how God walks. Moses understood that at certain times God walked differently.

For instance, at night he walked with the children of Israel in a pillar of fire (Psalms 78:14). While at daytime he walked with the children of Israel in a cloud (Exodus 13:21). You must understand that God doesn’t walk or move always he has specific times for everyone. For instance, for Adam and Eve, it was at the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8).

According to Galatians 5:16-18, Make sure you are walking with the eyes of the spirit open! So that you can see where God is taking you.

So, you must phase yourself to match God’s phase, for instance Elijah outran Ahab’s chariot (1 Kings 18:46) because the phase of God was so fast for Ahab to catch up with. Also, we see that Elijah’s phase was so fast that Elisha couldn’t catch up with him and he was taken in chariots of fire to heaven (2 Kings 2:11).

For you to phase yourself you need to start to think like God, talk like God, and see and hear things like God intends.

In short, you must shut all your five senses and only operate by faith and that is why the bible says we must walk by faith in God (2 Corinthians 5:7).

To walk at the phase at which God is walking you will have to give your burdens which are slowing you down to God first (Psalms 55:22). Otherwise, they will slow you down and you will not keep up the walk because of the weight on you. What I mean is that you should let Jesus be the only burden in your life in your work and in everything you do.

I didn’t say this walk with God is easy it will be filled with obstacles that you can’t see, and that is why you need Jesus and you have to trust him in this walk. Remember that busy schedule, even sickness, in challenges you have to keep up the walk you need to pray fast and even serve as required.

We rely on our senses so much that we miss God, remember that God is a spirit, and he lives in a spirit world, and he invites us to visit him and enjoy ourselves there. That is why God says to us Boldly come to the throne and obtain mercy. You need to be bold to walk with the invisible God, while the senses are screaming know that this not happening you keep going (Matthew 26:41).

Sometimes God will tell you to pray or fast or give or do an act of faith so that you can keep the walk so if you don’t then you get left behind and that is why he says remember where you left me return to me (Revelation 2:5) by doing what you had stopped doing.

When you wake up in the morning what is the first thing in your mind? Is it career-related, your phone, your children or is it God? Do you give God your first fruits of the day, Psalm 143:8,Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.” If you seek God’s divine guidance, he will lead you for the rest of the day.

Never forget what the Bible says, Psalms 113:3, “From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised.” Remember from the moment you wake up to the moment you sleep your day is filled with a lot of negativities coming from all corners from the media, colleagues, and even bosses. That is the more reason you should praise the Lord under your breath, and even aloud if possible. You could be singing or listening to a gospel song or even the bible read to you as you work. Fight to speak to God anywhere and everywhere and you will see how that will deepen your walk with God.

John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness but will have the Light of life.” In this day and age, most of us are walking away from God remember the prodigal son he chose to walk away from his father and God and not walk with God.

For instance:

People are running after positions, high income, and low moral standards. Still, keep walking with God’s righteousness.

Yes, you might have to put up with abuse, name calling but keep your walk with God always.

Others are walking half-heartedly with God. Sometimes they honor and love God but to the degree it’s convenient to their business and relationships.

According to Luke 18:8 “But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” The reason why he asked this is that most Christians started their spiritual journey very well but along the way, most of them became slack and backslidden. Are you still walking with God, or you have been entangled with the things of the world?

Benefits Of Having A Closer Walk With God.

  • Angels will feed you for instance they fed Elijah (1 Kings 19:5-8), and they fed the children of Israel in the desert (Psalms 78:24-25)
  • You live on a heaven’s economy for instance children of Israel their clothes and shoes never wore out in the desert (Deuteronomy 29:5).
  • When you start walking with God things seem to happen very fast in short what would take others years would only take you a matter of minutes. For instance, Philip was translated from one location to another a journey that could have taken him days if not months walking alone (Acts 8:39).

7 Steps To A Closer Walk With God.

Before you start the journey, you must know that the Lord is the destination, and he is still the way and that is why you have to follow these steps to reach that destination:

1. Have a destination in mind

Did you know that because a leaf doesn’t have a destination in mind it’s drifted to any place by the winds? According to Romans 3:23, all of us are destined to die because of our sinful nature but because of the promise we have in John 3:16 that can change.

So, choose your destination carefully before starting the walk. Always remember that God knows the end from the beginning so make sure you follow him in the beginning. There are places God can’t take you because that will be your end and he won’t want that.

2. Choose to follow Jesus the ‘only map to heaven’.

Remember Jesus is the word and according to Psalms 119:105 he is a lamp in that path leading to that destination. So spend a considerable amount of time in the Word (2 Timothy 3:17). if you are born again and have accepted Christ then Satan is too small to stop you from walking with God but if not then you are too small to stop Satan.

3. Always seek God’s Direction.

When you are lost and are about to give up seek God’s direction (Matthew 7:7), He will guide you in the direction He wants you to go. Follow His guidance, and don’t be afraid to make changes in your life when He tells you to.

4. Walk with Other Supportive Christians.

The reason for that is if you want to walk fast walk alone but if you want to walk far walk in a group. They will encourage and carry you when you feel like giving up. (Hebrews 11:25).

Dangers of walking alone.

The Devil is like a roaring lion looking for anyone walking alone to eat him. You easily get tired and stop walking with God and you take you own route either alone or with friends but remember there is a way that seems right to a man, but it leads to destruction and that is why God says remember where you left me return to me and I will return to you.

5. Be patient (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Be patient and trust that God knows what He is doing. A walk with God is worth the wait so don’t give up.

6. Always Obey God’s commands

If you obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 30:10

7. Persevere. There will be times when walking with God is difficult. When these times come, persevere and don’t give up.

Everyone who ever had a closer walk with God can tell you that it is the best thing you can ever do in life.
